Node.js vs PHP

Both Node.js and PHP are mature, production-proven choices — the right one depends more on your team and project shape than on either technology being objectively 'better.'
Node.js's biggest advantage is a single language across frontend and backend when paired with React or Next.js, which simplifies hiring and lets a small team share code and types across the whole stack. It's also a strong fit for real-time features (chat, live dashboards, notifications) thanks to its event-driven model.
PHP, especially with frameworks like Laravel, remains a fast, well-trodden path for traditional content-driven sites and CMS-style platforms, with a huge hosting ecosystem and lower infrastructure complexity for simpler projects.
Where Node.js tends to pull ahead is on projects with heavy real-time requirements, complex background job processing, or where the team wants one JavaScript/TypeScript codebase end-to-end.
If you're building a custom web application with real-time features, background automation, or AI-agent workflows, Node.js is generally the stronger fit. For a simpler, content-heavy site where you want the fastest path to a working CMS, PHP is still a perfectly reasonable choice.
